Default Durango 4.7 SLT+ water pump

I need to change the water pump in my 01 D'ango 4.7 SLT+. Fig 42 (pg 7-46) of my service manual calls for a special tool (spanner wrench, p/n 6958). Would anyone know if this is something I can get at an auto parts store, a dealer-only item, or is it REALLY needed at all? If so, does anyone know the dimension?

Thanks,
Leaky in Western WA

I believe that is for the fan removal. You can get around it by putting a wrench on the fan mounting bolt and smacking the wrench with a hammer. (hey it saved me $15 bucks)

Thanks for the info and the welcome.

I was just reading some previous water pump posts and reading more in my service manual...doesn't too like bad of a job. Any special precautions or tips you have to share along the way? Always appreciate tips from those experienced.

While you are in there:

1. Replace the small bypass hose.
2. Now is the time to replace the lower radiator hose.
3. You don't have to play the A/C just move the compressor to the side.
4. Check your belts and tensioner pulley for wear.

Just what I was looking for. Thanks

I changed the radiator last fall and swapped out the serp. belt and lower hose then. I;m sure the pump isn't, but do you think the bypass hose is a dealer item?

No just about anyone has bypass hoses.
