Default timeing cover

I was looking for a little help. I have a 2000 Durango with 68000 miles and I have nothing but problems. The latest one is my timeing cover is cracked. That's what I was told buy my Dodge dealer, my local mechanic ( who I trust ) told me that it was rotted. Dodge told me that something must have kicked up there and cracked the cover and also the thermostat housing. I don't take it for wheeling, I can't unerstand how a big SUV can have something kick up under it and crack something aren't they made a little tougher then that. So I guess my ? is hase anyone herd of them rotting or cracking and is this something commen. Also it would over heat just when I would use the AC if I shut the AC off the temp. would go back down, and could these problems go hand in hand. Thank You
