2000 Durango
I've read some good reviews about the year and some bad ones. And now I would like some honest opinions.........I would like to hear from actual owners of the SUV what its like. What problems have you had? (if any). What are the strong/weak points? What good things can you tell me about it.
Thanks.
Thanks.
I didn't like the way the big wigs are handle'n the sludge/ball joint problems. even though I'm not having any, they should own up to they're faults. the only thing bad I could say is that the gas mileage sucks. bone stock they run around 13mpg. which can be improved with a few mods. which is a good point. there's plenty of aftermarket parts for the D. for a three row suv you can't beat it for the price. the interior compliments the exterior. usually you'll have one or the other.
So the one im looking at is a 4.7 SLT 2000 with just under 85,000 K on it

I am very torn from reading countless reviews being good and bad. I love this veichle, the way it looks and the amount of space is exactly what I need.
I have heard alot of the engine issues are around 45-55,000 K..since this veichle is passed that, I might have smooth sailing?
I need some feedback Durango owners..please help.

My durango is pretty much exactly what you're looking at. It's a 2000, 4.7, and it has 87,000 miles on it. The problems on it are that the right rear window only sometimes works and I've heard of other people having that problem. The front brakes have to be replaced, but what can you expect out of 87,000 miles? The front clutch fan is loose as in it rocks back and forth. A friend of mine with the same type of Durango had the same problem. It can come from one of two things; if it's the water pump it's no problem. But if it is a type of nut that holds the fan on, then our car is the only one that uses that exact size, so it's going to cost a pretty penny. You have to rent a special tool to get it off as well. If you don't ever do anything to it, it can tear up your belts inside, but you won't know it untill **** has hit the fan. I think they are great SUV's and your not going to find an inexpensive ride that has 0 problems. Note: find out more exact detials about some of the stuff I said above, I just have the general idea, not specific details.
So what is this sludge issue I have been reading so much online about? I have heard people say its a big farce, and have read the tons of accounts where the oil pressure just drops off and thats it. New engine please and thank you.
Anyone with experience to this issue..it is my one high area of concern as to not getting this unit.

I currently own a 2000 Durango SLT, 60,000 + miles. Its a great truck with enough power to take anyone anywhere. I basically like the space, 3rd row seat, rear air and power it has for all my hill country driving. New shocks are a must... Im looking at the Monroes or Pro Comps.
The cons is that my damn right rear window like everyone else does not work. It used to work sometimes but after this Falls ice storm it is now dead just like the power locks on the same side. Drivers power locks are now going bad, I get this damn screeching everytime it opens and closes. My water pump and clutch had to be replaced. It was loose like Whiterider has stated but this also possilbly to my water pump making a damn whirring sound and I replaced both of them about 2 weeks ago with some help from a friend. Stealership will charge a lot of $$$$ for this job. Speed sensor has gone out, but easily replaced. Tranny and rear differential leaks but will be fixed this weekend. Upper Ball joints are a problem also, mine have to replaced sooner or later.
Now with engine sludge, I have been lucky... some others have had this problem.
My Dango is a slowly getting problems but with it being paid off its better to just keep it and get back on the maintenance. Dodges are very high maintenance vehicles if you do not take care of them. Dango is a keeper even with the minor quirks...

HI, I am new to this site! I own a 2000 Durango SLT and LOVE IT. My husband and I purchased it last September - it was a lease return, had 35,000 miles on it. Now it has 52,000 - So far, (knock on wood) we havent had any major problems. The air went out within three weeks of having the truck but the dealership fixed that with no charge to us. We drove the truck to Florida in March, getting 20 miles to the gallon, running 75 - 80 mph and that included going through the Smoky Mountains in TN. We live in New Albany, IN 10 minutes outside of Louisville, KY.I average 15.9 miles to the gallon in town. A lot of people only average 13 mpg, it's in the way you drive the truck and take care of it.
I do have a very high pitched sqeak coming from a brake on the passenger side, front or back, I am not sure. It will also squeak sometimes when I back up, I have no idea what could be causing that. BUT, all in all I love my truck and wouldn't trade it for any other vehicle. I have had a jeep, and a Chevy S10, I will purchase another durango for sure. My husband is worried about all the talk about the ball joints, he keeps an eye on them for any rust, etc.
