Default tranny question

new to forum. Need help please. Im supposed to pick up a 2000 durango r/t. 66 k miles. Im concerned that the tranny can be shifted from drive to low by simply pushing on the shifter. I dont need to pull it towards me it just slides thru the gears by pushing down and up, also while in neutral it is still in drive. The nuetral works but u have to go past it and bck into N then it is ok. Is this a simple linkage problem or may it be something bigger? the tranny was replaced about 1 yr ago. Also the exhaust system is very rusted, everything else underneath is very clean tho. Is that normal for a 6 yr old car. Any help would be appreciated thanks

Sounds like the shirt indicator is not aligned to the shifter position. The trans is probably fine.
The cable needs adjusted.

My exhaust is pretty rusty as well and I have a 2000 now with 47k miles I bought it with 30k last Oct. One good thing with the exhaust rusting out is that it gives you an excusee to go get a custom exhaust for more power and better mileage and if you have a missus she can't say anything. I can't wait until mine falls apart. Oh and when you do change the exhaust go with stainless and you'll never have to worry about it again.

thank you for the advice. I brought it to my mechanic today and he also said it was the shift indicator and tranny was fine and I will be getting a stainless muffler too thanks again.
