This is my first post so be gentle... Yesterday I was driving my '00 Durango to grandmothers house for christmas and a very loud roaring noise started in the engine compartment. The truck runs fine, no warning light and no elevated gauges. The roar is dull when idling, but very loud at acceleration. Any ideas? I am a mechanical moron, so again, be gentle.

It might just be your clutch fan locked up. Look under the hood and try to rotate your fan. It should have a small bit of resistance to it.

Our 2000 did this last year, dealer said it was the fan clutch, they wanted $200+ to change it. I purchased one at the parts store and installed it myself, needed a strap wrench to hold the pulley while backing off the retaining nut. Easy job, good luck.

I have the same problem with my '99. The fan doesn't disengage and the problem gets worse as the outside air temerature increases. I am amazed at the loss of power when the fan doesn't disengage. One dealer told me that I had a bad fan clutch and replaced it. The new one was even noisier than the first. Another dealer later told me that it is "a design problem" and they couldn't do anything. Can anybody recommend a particular brand or store for an aftermarket replacement?

 

Is the new clutch louder at initital start up, or after it disengages and during normal driving? (is it louder all the time is what I'm asking).......the "stealership" said that it was a design problem with the clutch itself?? I have 245,000km on mine and mine and it still works like new. I have an '00 but the Dwent pretty much unchanged between those two years. My guess is the stealership ripped you off

 

The new ones are louder than the originals but you can always do an e-fan upgrade if you want no noise and some extra horsies. Just do a search on viper fan in the forum.

 

Green are you saying that the new fans are louder all the time, or only when the clutch is engaged?
