Default Column Shifter

Hey all,
I am new to this forum but I have read many of the posts and found them very useful. However I am having a problem and wonder if anyone can help? I have a 2002 Durango SXT 2wd and I can't shift it out of park!! It did this before but after about 5 min of messing with it it started back working. This morning it messed up on me again but this time it didn't start working. Is there a safety switch on the brake system that needs to be checked out or what? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is the sterring wheel locked up? You might have to turn it hard one way or the other. Also there should be a safty switch in the column that needs to be lubbed.

Thanks for the info. It was the safety switch that needed some lube. Saves me from going to the shop and spending money on a 10 min. job that I did myself and it only cost me $2.99 for a can of WD-40.

Was that safety switch implemented later into the first Gen D's? I have an '00 and as long as the key is turned to accessory (first click) i can takethe tranny out of park without pressing the brakes. really helps when I just need to move it up the driveway a few meters, or when I roll into the street before I leave for work at 4:45 am, (flowmaster is pretty loud)
