hello everyone. i was driving my durango along the highway about 4 months ago when i lost oil pressure and it started knocking. i had it towed home and later drove it(still knocking) around to a shop that fixes my cars. he told me the rod was not completely out(something to the effect of not shooting out of the block) but i would need to replace my engine.
now i have taken in so much information on the net that i cant word it correctly. but is it possible that there is another solution to swapping engines for me. i hope this is enough info. if not i can talk u to death.(f.y.i..i take em all to valvoline every 3k and i use synthetic).
please help me before i pour my income tax into a new engine if i dont have to. thanks!

From the description of your mech, it sounds like you spun a rod bearing. If this is the only damage, you might get away with a remanufactured crank and new rod/crank bearings. Chances are though that the rod with the spun bearing will have to be replaced which means the head on that side will have to come off. As you an see, a repair like this can quickly become labor intensive, and unless your mech can inspect things enough to know where the damage has stopped, it might be better to look for a low mileage engine from a parts yard with some kind of warranty.
The short answer here is that there is no cheap remedy. If you can do the swap yourself, you can save the cost of the labor.
Since your D is 99, you have either the 5.2 or 5.9 motor which hs been known for oil pump issues as well as the famous belly pan gasket failure whuch can lead to low oil and the result that you had.
Also, not to start an oil debate here but I do not have much confidence in Valvoline. Not to say that it was the cause of your problem, just that I don't think that it helped things either. I have run Mobil 1 ever since I bought my 95SHO in 1997 b/ca at that time the replacement cost of its 3.2 motor from Ford was 10K. Certainly to each their own, but I have had yet to hear any bad stories about M1, and if BMW, Corvette, Cadillac, Viper, and MBenz spec it as factory they must know something.
