fuel pump ??????
My 2000 Durango makes a strange noise from the back sounds like a electric motor, The only motor I know back there is the fuel pump and wiper motor which is not being used. Would a fuel pump give you some kind of warning its going out? Vehicle seems to run good, No hesitation or anything like that. But it does do it once in awhile and sometimes nothing? Anyone have this problem before?
Thanks

It could be the fuel pump. Does it do it all of the time? Get someone to listen near the drivers side rear wheel when the car is just parked and running and see if the noise is coming from the pump. It is so hard to get to them you want to make sure that is the problem.
What does it actually sound like, is it high pitched whirring or a lower sounding grinding? If it is not all of the time is there a certain time it does it more, or times when it is more noticable. If it doesn't do it all of the time I don't think it is from your F/P. Maybe a U-joint going bad? I don't know!
Normally at start up is when it is noticed and sometimes when just driving, It sounds like a whining/grinding sound last for a few seconds. This weekend I will crawl under and look around.

Let the truck sit overnight and the next day get someone to turn the ignition on but do not start the car. Get somewhat underneath the gas tank and listen to the pump, you should hear it ingage once the ignition is turned on. You can try it a couple of times and see if it is similar to the sound you're hearing. Do you let the it get next to empty before fill-ups, the screen on the pump can get damaged very easily and allow you to suck up crud into the pump, that is what you might be hearing.
