how do you take off the plug thats connected.
does it just pull off or do you have to do comething with the clips?

You bet, all you have to do is move the little red or orangeish clip to one side, Then press the clip together and slide it off. They do this now so the harness doesn't vibrate off

Rear lights are in round plugs that twist out. I needed to use a pair of channel locks to grasp and twist while at the same time making sure not to damage the plug. The seal is difficult to 'break/unseal' at times.
