on the 1999 models, there are 2 sensors. Speed sensor and something output sensor. I think the speed sensor is the one located by the rear axle and the output sensor is located at the end of the transmission. Or vice versa. Try replacing those 2 sensors. The parts are not expensive and it is not hard to replace if you have basic mechanical know how.

I am having a shifting problem as well, but it is between 2nd to 3rd. It will not shift unless I let off of the gas pause for 2-3 seconds and get back on it, even if I floor it it will max out on RPM's and not shift. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sorry for taking so long to reply, but I've been out of the loop after my wife and I had a new baby girl on Dec 6th.

The sensor was located in the bottom of the tranny, in the valve body. We just removed the pan, removed the valve body, and popped out the retaining clip and the old sensor. Then, reversed the process for reinstalling it.

But my friend did loose the retaining clip, so we had to fab one before we could finish.

If I can remember, I'll ask my friend what exactly the part was called (with a part number) and exactly where it was located.

That almost sounds like a tranny going out, but for your sake I hope I'm wrong.

Common problem with these trannys is a groove that is cut too deeply and a seal (in the pump?) starts falling into the groove and creates shifting problems. Good rebuild kits have 2 seals to accommodate this potential problem when doing a rebuild.

It is common that the transmission will start doing this between 70K and 100K miles.

I just realized my tranny is now acting funny. It works great under normal driving conditions. But there are times when I need to punch the gas to accelerate when driving at low speeds anywhere around 15-25 mph. When I hit the gas full throttle while in drive position, the tranny will try to shift from 2nd to 3rd gear but instead, the tranny will totally slip and not able to shift to 3rd gear. When it slips, it goes neutral mode on me and engine freespins. Luckily I just found out the Durango has a governor that prevents you from over-revving the engine past its redline! Thank god for that. So the only way to force the tranny to upshift to 3rd gear was to temporary release the gas pedal from full throttle and then the tranny will shift to 3rd gear. This has happen to me twice already. So far, I haven't a clue why it does this. Right now if I need to seriously get the Durango to move, I have to manually shift and so far, that is the only solution. No check engine light when the tranny slips between gear changes.

I wonder if it may be my governor actuator switches going bad again. They got replaced under warranty 20k miles go when my tranny gets stuck in 2nd gear and won't shift to 3rd. Check engine light came on when this happened.
