I bought a 96 Intrepid used this year and it makes some very odd sounds. It will make a dull but loud thumping or creaking sound that sounds like it's coming from under the hood or in the area of the front axle. Also, when the automatic transmission is switched from say Drive to 3rd, it will sometimes make a similar sound. This dull thumping sound also comes when I letoff the accelerator. </P>


It sounds almost like somebody is under the hood banging on the driveshaft or the frame wth a wrench, but not very hard, just loud enough to be annoying.</P>


Has anybody else experienced this?</P>

The noise is probley stabelizer links or strut mounts both vary commonon the intrepids</P>

 

You might also want to check your motor and transmission mounts. Check to see if the rubber is torn, missing or shows signs of damage. If it is and you cannot, or do not want to pay for new ones, you might be able to find motor/transmission mount inserts for around $30-$40 for the set. These will simply insert into the openings/voids in the mounts rubber and will effectively fix the mounts.

 

Check the tranny mount at the crossmember.
