evap canister purge solenoid noise
I noticed a noise in the car that sounded like a lifter tick, however when i reved the car up the noise didnt increase so i ruled that out. i went under the hood looking for the noise and found it coming from what i think is the evap canister purge solenoid. its on the passenger side of the car just under the transmission plugs. it has an elecrical connector and 1vacum line that runs the the canister and one to the throttle body. when i put my hand on the thing i could feel it tapping. now it doesent do it all the time but most of the time it ticke. now is this normal or is there a problem with it?? and ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lance

I'm not sure you are looking at the evap canister purge solenoid. I have a 97 (3.5) and the evap canister purge solenoid is located on a bracket attached to the air cleaner. Need a bit more info, year, engine, did you trace the hose ends, and any pictures?
If it is the evap canister purge solenoid, it should have the word "top" on the top of it. It will not operate if installed incorrectly. After engine warm up, the PCM energizes & de-energizes the solinoid aprox 5-10 times per second, depending on operating conditions. This rate change is how the PCM varies the vapor flow. I have never noticed a tick from mine, but maybe mine is not working!

sorry for the lack in information on my part. its a 1995 intrepid ES with a 3.3L V6. the solinoid has the words TOP on it and has an electrical connector and 2 vacum lines off it. when your sitting in the car it sounds like a lifter noise. if u put your finger on the solinoid u can actually feel it tapping inside.
I am also having the same problem with my '96 SOHC Neon. The solenoid recently (the past month or so) started to click loudly after it's engaged when the engine warms up. I can hear it from inside the car. When you put your fingers on it you can feel it clicking away. If all the vac lines look good my guess is to replace the solenoid. That's my next step. $38 at Autozone for the Neon part. It's probably going bad but hasn't reached the point where it'll throw any codes.
