take out the spark plug......set your hand over the hole and turn the motor over.....
when you feel the air push your hand up, then your on the compression stroke

he asked was how to know if its on the compression stroke..
but
you can take a wooden doll rod or a long screwdriver and place it in the spark plug hole....while cranking the moto..(by hand)....watch the rod and when it reaches its highest point then its at TDC
