Default auto differential trouble

I recently purchase a 96 neon that I was told had a bad axle which was causing some noise. It turns out the axles and cv's are fine. When I removed the inspection cover over the differential I found several teeth missing on the crown gear.......I'm not a happy camper! Can the diff be removed without removing the tranny? could I least change the crown gear from this position? It seems with the axles removed and the diff bearing caps removed if I were to jack up the trans slightly I would have room to get the diff out.
Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated.

ps. what could possibly cause broken teeth on such a strong gear? ( in an automatic trans )

thanks again, smokey

What can cause it, Well NEUTRAL SLAMS!!!! I busted up my tranny in about 4 slams, I learned my lesson. Your probably gunna have to drop the tranny. But if not YAY! good luck!
