Default Aftermarket Filter Problem

I put a K&N on my neon and it ran fine for about thirty seconds then just started jerking for and few seconds and stalled. It then wouldnt start and the Check Engine light came on. I rapped it in a rag and drove home and put the stock set up back on and it drove fine. How can i make it work with an after market filter?

It is just a K&N Cone filter that i put on the end of of the intake tube after removing the air box...the problem was obviously too much air and not enough gas but i thought the computer would adjust to it...is their anything i can do?

The PCM should correct the fuel.

Maybe its the PCM. I just started driving and it was already warm and i put my foot to the floor and it sputtered to a stop and the Check Engine light came on and it would start again. Should i drive it gently for a few minutes so thte pcm adjusts? How long will it take?
