ive had the EXACT same problem with those stupid autozone rent-a-tools. i just put a smallbold that would fit where the rod was insertedin the puller and put the longest rod from the kit over that. then hopefully the person that used it after me would never have the same problem. just dont tell them you did that when you return the toll, what they dont know wont hurt them

Ok So . I bought a 99 Neon R/T .. I am fixing it up. I rented a 3 jawed puller from Advanced( looked exactly like the one in the Chilton Manual) I did exactly what it said in the book and it broke the pully.... So now how do I get it off.. I can't attach a pully unless it attahes to the outside or the outside ring on the inside if that makes sense.. But I couldn't get to catch on there it just sliped off... I plan on buying a Unorthodox pulley anyway so I don't really care that it is broken.. I just need it off.... Thanks

Mac tools, and I think snap-on, make a special puller for the neon engine. It cost me about $100. I tried the pullers from autozone first and had nothing but problems.Once you use the the mac tool, you will see how easy it is.You can try a dealer, and maybe a friendly mechanic will loan you his tool. In my opinion, Dodge made the pulley so fin hard to get off and on, so that a regular person would have a heck of a time and have to take it in to the dealer to get it fixed. So they make more money on repairs.

If you attached the puller to the outside of that pulley, I'd imagine you would break it. So, if it's just the outer portion that's broke you can still get it off easily. The puller should be connected to the pulley on the innermost portion that is connected to the crankshaft. If you feel around the backside of the this innermost portion you'll feel little slots or grooves on the backside for the puller to lock into. The puller I use is from NAPA. It's a combination puller and costs $15. It's a combination puller (8 ways I think.) but set it up just like they show in the picture and the jaws will fit the slots on the back of that crank pulley perfectly.

Now, if you've broken the pulley to the point you cannot attach the puller to the inner portion (I don't think you did that though.), then you best get a cold chisel, sawsall or cutting torch and be real careful!

http://s165.photobucket.com/albums/u...t=IMG_0441.jpgthis is exactly what you need. as you can see from the picture it comes with 3 rods if you rent it from auto zone dont walk out of there without all 3 rods. http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/objec...9700/49607.JPGfor a picture directly from the snap on website

Yes I attached the first puller to the inner most point... and it broke.. so I will try the other pullers you all have mentiond but i dont think i will be able to attach it since it is now broken...

Does anyone think the orthodox pulley is a good idea or do you know of a diff one that is as good o better that is cheaper????

Thanks
