alternator ground
when i was removing my alternator, the original grounding location ended up getting damaged so i ended up grounding it to a small hole right above the plug... i sanded it to expose clean metal but after putting it back on something isnt working because my battery died and the battery light came on immediately.... you think its a bad ground or did i night tension the belt properly??? thanks
Im not sure where you mean, when you say "a small hole above the plug".There are 4 ground wires on the neon to my knowledge. All 4 of mine had problems..lol There are 2 coming of the negative terminal of battery, 1 goes to the frame just above radiator to drivers side some.Another goes from negative terminal to the lower starter bolt. There is 1 that is about a foot long that attaches near your transmission mount. And the last 1 is the one your talking about, that hooks by the alternator to up near the front strut. The one your talking about I had to replace on my neon, it completely wore out.
How did the original grounding location get damaged? Did the grounding wire break?
As far as the belt being tensioned properly, you should be able to tell by moving it while engine is off.It should have like an inch of play...or so.maybe a lil less.Feed us more info...
good luck

well when i removed the ground cable that was on the alternator the ground clamp snapped because it was so rusted... so i decided to use one of the 2 holes that are pre-threaded above the alternator plug... i soldered new wire onto the old ground wire due to the wire being too short for the new mounting location... and then i soldered a eletrical connector to the end of the wire so im positive my connection to the wire is good... i think i might have the belt too tight because there is only about 1/4 of slack [sm=sigh.gif] but would that have anything to do with my engine running a little off and my alternator not working properly???
1/4 inch of slack one way is perfect for a total of a half inchboth ways, too loose and it will screech test your alternator by starting the car and pulling off the battery cable car will die if alternater or connection of altenator is bad. check your wiring one more time
You sure you put the crank pulley all the way back on the crank.? Does the alternator pulley look like it lines up to the crank pulley.? If not your lower alternator bolt hole could be wore oblong, causing alternator to sit crooked.
