Default VSS Question

I like this forum already... they allowed me an account. Anyways, I purchased my girlfriend a 96 Dodge Neon Highline with the SOHC Engine and the automatic tranny. The speedometer went berserk, I have already resoldered the points twice, gotten two speedometers from a jy (one with a tach, one without just for the hell of it). To no avail, so I figured that it was the VSS because the other gauges work on it. I have seen the picture of where the VSS is supposed to be located but that picture is kind of vague and I am at a loss. The Haynes Book (to me the Book of Death) is even more vague than the picture. Can anybody provide me some instructions or at least clarify on where this sensor is located. Thanks Alot!!!

Ck the output connector for a broken wire, this has been a common problem as of late, because the wire is too short going to the sensor.

Does the odometer work? If so, then it isn't your VSS. But it is located on the back part of the tranny and sticks straight up at you. It's held in with (1) 10mm bolt.

For give me I forgot to ask if you had a 3speed auto or the 4 speed. Thats because the speed sensor is mounted extenion housing near the firewall, 4 speed auto is screwed into the transmission case near the the TRS,

It's a three-speed automatic, and about the odometer... whenever the speedometer doesnt work, neither does the odometer... its weird because if the car has been driven for about 15 or 20 minutes, it usually "wakes up" and goes... granted it's jumpy before it gets started... sounds like a short somewhere... but I am definately up for suggestions...

Thanks,

Uhhh, I would hope a "Dodge/ Chrysler / Jeep tech" would know that the 1st gen neon did not come with a 4-spd auto
