Default coolant problem

i got home from work this morning and the wife calls me....says her car was leaking coolant real bad....
so i figure its the water pump since the car has 172,000 miles on it......
i drive the 35 miles to where she was at and the parking lot was covered in coolant.....i pour some water in the thermostat housing to see exactly where it was leaking from......and to my surprise, there was no leak
i checked it out a bit and the coolant all came out of the coolant overflow tank......now i cant figure this out..
why would the coolant pour out of the overflow tank while the car was running...atleast a much as it did[&:]
i filled the tank, and topped off the thermostat housing and drove the car home...no leaks or anything...
why would it do this??????

my car has a hole in the overflow tank. so when i poor some in the overflow tank it runs out of the frame rail on the passengers side in about the middle of the car. i have no idea how this works but i replaced the stat and it hasnt overheated since

no hole in the overflow tank.....filled it with coolant and didnt leak
wife attempted to drive the car again this afternoon and it did the same thing again...
by the time i got to her there was a puddle under the car.....i couldnt open the t-stat cap since it was so hot, but she drove it home and it didnt leak

im wondering if its just simple like the t-stat cap.....but soon im gonna go change that and the t-stat itself just incase

the coolant might be coming out of the water pump

when my car would over heat coolant/water would leak out and we didnt know where

then when the pump finally blew we found out it was from the water pump

if you already checked that then sorry!

fixed the problem.....
the coolant wasnt comming from the waterpump.....it was from the overflow tank
the a/c wasnt being used since it was about 5:30 am and only about 50 degrees outside

so,
the car was slightly overheating since the fans werent working....aparently she didnt notice[&:]
after a thurough investigation i found that there is a small relay switch on the left fan that controlls both of them....well, the relay switch shorted out and one of the prongs was burnt..which burnt a small part of the plug for the fans, therfor shorting them out and causing them not to work...
so when the car would heat up and the fans wouldnt kick on, it would relieve some of the pressure by dumping excess coolant out of the overflow tank....
replaced the fans and the plug......no problems, car does great
