Replacing the Oil Pump
well iam replacing the oil pump and i really need to know if i have to take the engine out or do i just have to remove the oil pan and get at the oil pump. and it would be helpful for someone to tell me to how difficult it will be and wat i will need
Shaun,
No you won't need to take the engine out, but you'll be removing a fair amount of hardware off the passenger side of the engine in addition to the oil pan. Get a hold of a Haynes manual. I know they aren't always that complete, but it will help. You will be removing the passenger side motor mount to get the plastic timing belt cover off to expose the crankshaft pulley that will also need to come off along with the timing belt, alternator belt, power steering and air conditioning belt. The timing belt tensioner and mounting bracket for it will need to come off so you can move the engine side of the timing belt cover (after removing it's bolts) to finally get to the oil pump bolts. It's a whole lot of stuff coming off for a really simple part swap. Theres more to it than I mention, but you get the idea why a manual would help?!?!
Are you positive your pump is bad? No pressure or do you have an oil leak that appears to be coming from that area of the motor? I say this because I originally had thought that mine was leaking from the pressure relief. Took it all apart and found nothing wrong. Put it back together and still had a bad leak. Then I tore it down further and found that the oil was coming from my camshaft seal which was not only bent, but not even seated in the block! I found from this site that camshaft and head gaskets on 1st gens are notorious for this. Thankfully mine head gasket is fine.
Best of luck! Eamil me if you get stuck at some point. Glad to help out.
