Default Axle Length Problem 98 Neon SOHC

Hi Guys / Gals
Was hopeing I might get some help.. My Sons 98 neon had the drivers Axle go out. I went to tke local $hucks and purchased a Refurb with the waranty..I put it in but something didn't seem right.. The boot nearest to the tranny was stretched out..Stupid me, I left it in and thought Oh well, it has to be right, so I left it in.. Anyway, two miles down the road it failed in that very spot.. Now it screwed up the bearing in the Tranny.. I just got it fixed and went to get another Axle.. Same problem.. To Short when I get the threads tightened. I tried two others and still the same issue.. I just went to my local National autopart store and got one from them and when I got it installed I am having the same old stretched boot. This is a manual 5 speed Trans.. No ABS 2.0l 16Valv SOHC.... The guy says there are only two and I tried them and they don't fit. The part number I have is 60-3073 and the MFG is AA1.. The axle is about 3/4" to 1" to short.

Now I also replaced the passanger side and that one is fine. I don't have anything that specifies that this car has ABS and nothing stands out when I am looking at the Wheel Hub.. The Vin doesn't specify anything.. How do you tell if it has ABS and has anyone else ran into this before"

Dodge wants $500 for an Axle
Thanks in advance

to tell if a car has abs, look underneath the brake booster...if there is abs then there will ba a large aluminum box under the booster with a bunch of brake line hooked to it...if no abs, you will be able to see the ground and tranny....
or remove the lid on the power distribution center behind the battery....check for an ABS fuse or relay
or, if you have abs, then the brake pedel should say antilock braking system on it...

if the boot is being stretched then i would assume that with one end of the axel installed, you are probally twisting the other end to meet the splines correctly....therefor whats happening is the bearings in the CV joint are pulling away from the joint and binding up.....which is then causing the boot to stretch and not seating the bearings correctly in the CV end.......
try installing one end of the joint and then instead of twisting the joint to allign the splines, try to twist the wheel bearing side instead...
and, how are you installing the outter end into the wheel hub????
it can easily be done by dislocating the lower ball joint...then the hub assembly will swivel toward the rear of the car and will allow you to easily slide the axel end into the hub

sorry if this sounds confusing, if there is sumthing you dont understand then just ask

Well I checked the stuff from your Reply and Thank you for your reply.. No ABS as I thought.. The Axle isn't twisted in any way when installing.. I put the end in the tranny then I turn the Hub to match the splines.. I added a few pictures to show what I am running into..

Thanks

Not a lot of respose on this one, I guess this doen't happen very often. Is it possible that another transission with the same spline pattern could have been put in by the pevious owner? Does another Tranny even fit? I'm stumped. Passanger side axle from the local shop fits fine ordered for the98 Neon SOHC 2,0.. The axle for the driver side is about 1" too short.

No one has ever had this problem?

Thanks dodgeforum members

are you sure you didnt pull the inner joint apart while you were putting it in? its easy to do and can be a pain to get back in. if you run the nut on, then moved the spindle out to connect the lower ball joint you pulled it apart. you have to pull it back and turn it untill it goes back into place.
i have one i blew apart on my car if you want pictures of what happens when theyre apart
the outer joint has enough movement to take up the extra room of the inner one being seperated from the cup

.... ill go take pics

well, you wouldnt be able to put the ball joint on if it was pulled apart... the outerjoint doesnt slide at all... so im leaning towards engine / transmission alignment from bad mounts maybe, anything bent in the suspension? you would notice the wheel leaning though...

I just dealt with this issue Friday while replacing my drive side shaft.

I ended up replacing the control arm as it was completely worn out

Also in my experince from Friday- the 1st CV Shaft was more then 2 inches shorter then my existing Shaft, the 2nd shaft I bought was almost 1 inch longer then my existing shaft. So the Remans are not keeping the parts within spec!

of course the Joint does move a little - basicly I would compress the shaft as much as I could and would meaure it then.
