Pull your ebrake and put some sort of block or wood behind the tires and use jack stands shouldnt go anywhere then.

the vss gear on a manual runs off of a ring gear on one of the tranny drive gears........if you feel like that gear is messed up then you have to take the tranny apart in order to get to it

from the sound of it......yes

when you remove the tranny from the car, there will be about 15-20 bolts that hold the main case to the bell housing......after you remove the bolts you can take a hammer and lightly hit all the way around the case until you separate the case from the bell housing......after that you will have to pull out the main gear and remove the vss drive gear and get it replaced
hardest part is putting the main case and bell housing together....there are 4 shifting fork rods in there that can give you alot of problems and need to be adjusted just right...otherwise, the speedo not working would of been the least of your problem

and no i dont know where you can get one of those gears from
