A couple questions on a 1998 Neon
I own a 1998 Neon, made by plymouth, but a Neon none the less.
I was curious if anyone knew if it were possible to take off the shift **** on my manual transmisison gear stick, or if it is molded on. I'm nervous to just twist it hard, as some people i've known have had molded ***** fall off and there were no threads to reattach a new one.
Also, I am unable to exceede about 85-90 mph, even on a flat straight stretch, and i'm not sure why. Is there a performance inhibiting chip inside the car, or is it something else. The car was purchased used, and i'm just starting to get in to rebuilding and tricking it out.
Thanks for the help.

to remove the **** know pull the boot down and there will be two tabs to deal with and then pull up while holding those tabs off the things that hod the tab make sense[&:]there is a speed limiter but it sould kick in at 110mph i can help you there.
idk about the shift ***. never changed mine. but as far as a chip stopping it from exceeding a certain speed never heard of it. i have a 98 dodge neon and i can get mine to 110 easy on the freeway. i dont think there should be a difference btwn a dodge and plymouth. but hell what do i know im 18 haha

if it has a manaul trans then there might be a few possibilities......
it could have an auto pcm in it.....
or
the headgasket might be going bad...thus causing the car not to get good enough compression to make it go much faster....
is the car kinda doggy at lower pseeds or does it still move pretty good????
how many miles are on the motor???
when your going as fast as the car can go, does it actually seem really fast, like its going 110, or would it seem more like its doing 85-90???? i only ask becasue maybe as a possibility your speedo is just off
The instructions above for the shift **** removal are correct, it only takes about 5 seconds to do it.

do you know how to drive standard. no offnese. but when i started out i would shift to soon.and car wouldnt reach the speeds fast enough.
you gotta be shifting like at 3500 and 4 , for like the highways and stuff. i use to go to 5000,but for now i go a bit early(my car is dieing) becasue that way you get more accleration. thats what it sounds like to me. lol

Well, there is a 2 part answer to that question. Yes, I can drive a manual very well, however, my neon was one not blessed with a tach built in. I have to shift on sound alone, and I haven't much money should I overrev my engine and hurt something. A tach is on the list of things to purchase. 5th gear seems like primarily a cruising gear. Is there anyone with a 98' neon with a tach that could tell me the maximum mph reached before red lining?

and by cheaper i ment sohc and some dohc
