There is a small horseshoe looking retainer clip that holds it on. You can buy the $5 tool that takes them off easily or try popping it off with a small screwdriver. But don't LOSE IT. You can also try using a towel or something and stick it behind there and work it back and forth until it comes off (I have heard of doing this, but never tried it).
I usually take a paperclip, unbend it, and put a SMALL hook at the end with a pair of needle nose pliers.. that usually does the trick! To get it back on, just put it back on the crank handle and push it back on.. might need a light tap with a hammer

dude a shop towel or hand rag works great. skip the tool. this method, if you start the rag behind the handle and go up towards the hub, sends the handle flyin off in an instant. and the lil pin will stay right in the handle. you just gotta make sure you look to see where the lil ring that goes behind the handle flies off to.
you gotta turn the handle where its pointing straight down (6 o'clock). grab the rag by two corners, one in each hand and put it under the handle going up towards 12o'clockslide the rag left to right with upwards pressure. it'll pop every time.
