Ok, My brother helped me do a partial rebuild on my back up auto trans well finally I got it in yesterday. Everything works well except I have to let off the gas for 2nd gear to engage and once in a while 1st has a slight lag but you can still feel it grab and ithas very good off the line power than what I was used to for the first year of owningmy Neon. Its weird because whenI want to down shift into 2nd gearI have to step on the gas a bit

Whenme and my brotherdid the partial rebuildwe checked the clutches andall the forward and reverse clutcheslooked great and were considered"like new" by a transmission shop I asked, so I know those must be good. I also compared them with my old transmission clutches and those were totally bare metal no stuff on them at all and that had no problem shifting into second gear even though it slipped. Basically this tranny looks brand new and all the internals appeared to be in working order and almost brand new shape.

I did empty all of the trans fluid out ofthe torque converter and the transmission so both were empty and I added 5 quarts of transmission fluid 7176/ATF-4 so I'm not sure if it needs more seeing as it has to fill the torque converter up.

 

it takes over 8 quarts.

Well 2nd gear is nowhere to be seen and thats why it is laging, because it shifts to 3rd...so I wonder if adding the extra3 quarts will help. I hope it just needs more fluid and at worst a valve body replacment.

So 2nd gear doesnt engage at all it just waits to find 3rd gear, thats the problem I'm having now. Also my nuetral saftey switch only lets me start the car in nuetral since the tranny swap which is screwed up.

 

your supposed to fill the tq converter before you connect it back to the trans i do believe.

I was always told it pumps itself up....****.

Its weird 1st and 3rd work great but 2nd is gone, could it be something to do with electronics? My Nutural safety switch is out since tranny swap and I wonder if it has something to do with that or along those lines...

damn I hope thats the worst case senario, I'd hate to pull tranny again, anybody know of any shift kits available for the Neon Automatic?
