when we first got our '90 Legacy, the coolant res. had a white milky sustaince in it. it ended up just being the type of coolant that was used in it before. isn't the chocolate milk color what you have to worry about? have you tried changing the oil and then seeing if it comes back? and are you loosing coolant or is it just over heating?

 

Well, if you've been loosing coolant and can't find the leak, then it's been going out of your tailpipe. It probably just finally got bad enough to breach into the oil.

Straight water takes a lot longer to mix with oil than antifreeze. It'll show up as gooeycondensation at the top of the engine first (in the valve cover and on the bottom of the oil cap. Soon there will be enough that it'll show up on the dipstick above the oil. In time, it will permiate the oil and go "chocolate milk".

 

Rats, that's exactly what's happening...it's even starting to find its way into the throttle body via that recirculate hose. I'm screwed...

More than likely you have a blown HG. Might as well change the timing belt, idler pulley and water pump while you are at it
