Default HELP!!!

This 96 Neon is my winter car that a didn't pay a whole lot for and don't plan on dumping much money into. Last Monday morning, I was going to put my car into reverse and it was VERY difficult to (automatic tranny) and same for putting it into drive and then park once I got to work. When I got out of work, I went to put it into reverse and it wouldn't budge. I tugged and suddenly the cable popped off of the linkage at the top of the tranny. Today I went out there and got the shift cable back on (which moves nicely when not connected so I knowthe cable isn't frozen) but the linkage still won't budge. I removed the cable and tried by hand and still no movement. What do I do now? It is stuck at work which is 60 miles from home. Please help!

Thanks,
Chris

So from what i got out of it you were trying the shift so hard the linkage on the tranny popped off? When you move it when its not hooked up it moves fine. But when hooked up to the tranny it wont move? So i conclude from that either the linkage is twisted, catching on something, or it is your tranny thats not allowing it to shift. Try some lube on it and see if that helps. Otherwise I cant help you. I am not an auto tranny guy. Do you have tranny fluid in it?

It wouldn't come out of Park so I was working it forward and backward but it wouldn't move then popped. I thought the cable broke but when I looked under the hood, it was disconnected from the linkage. Yes the cable moves freely but not the linkage. Yeah I figured it was one of those things... lol Kinda lookin for some help on what to do or look for. Already tried the lube. The kickdown linkage at the top of the drive linkage moves perfectly fine too by the way...

before your tranny busted did you have to apply the brakes to move from out of park?? if so see what the switch is and check that. don't know much about atx's either but i know that newer vehicles had a safety switch to prevent kids from taking the tranny out of park. somewhere to start maybe.
