Default Cam Timing Help -(SOHC)

Hello. I need help trying to time my Neon. I'm getting a Code 11. The car does run, but is sluggish on the bottom end and surges sometimes. So I want to check if everything is at TDC.I do have an adjustable gear on the cam but everything is set at zero. My problem is that my timing cover is missing the top half. I bought the car this way and am wonderiing if there is another type of reference point to use since the one on the timing cover is gone. I'm goiing to try and attach a photo of what I have to work with. Thanks.......

Put piston one at tdc and check ur timing mark on the cam gear? Put a screw driver in your spark plug hole and turn the crank until it goes up to the top. There should be a mark on the head I thought? Its early maybe i am wrong.

Thats what I'm trying to get at. I have the mark on the gear, but no reference point to align the gear too. My timing cover is gone, so I have no mark.......is there another way to get the cam lined up?

your sol if the back plastic cover is gone. theres no mark on the head.

As "I_Ride_Neon" said, you can putsomething down in the cylinder. BUT NOT A METAL SCREWDRIVER!! Use a woden dowel rod.....

Youd have to take the crank pulley off it you wanted to see the timming notch on the block also...

all you have to do is lign the mark on the gear straight up 90* with the center of the head and the cam center as well.
i have had no cover, front or back for a coupe years now.

It's a straight line threw the center of the cam and crank pullies at top dead center of piston #1
Is the air filter clean? New plugs? wires good? I had a wiring mess from heat on the back side of the engine causing alot of problems. had to replace much of the harness to get rid of the problem. It was also throwin a 11 code.
And i never use a metal object to check for TDC i use a 3/8 wooden dowl. Just something my dad taught me years ago.

good luck
