P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

could be bad O2 sensor (will make you run rich) or cat converter or a reminder to blaze a fat one

if the cat is gutted Bank 2 sensor could be messing up. Bank 1 is before the Cat. Bank 2 is after.

Gutted cat is the problem. More info on the code: http://www.obd-codes.com/p0420

Your options are live with the code, replace the cat, or put on a high-flow cat.

No, that's not correct. Banks 1 & 2 refer to which side of the engine (bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder #1). The sensor before the cat is Sensor #1 and the one behind is Sensor #2.

For example, you could have the same description for Bank 1, Sensor 1. Or it could be for Bank 1, Sensor 2. Or Bank 2, Sensor 1, etc.

A P0420 usually means the cat is bad. In this case that's a given. The code will not go away until the cat is replaced. Beware cheap, inferior cats that don't last!
