Can't Figure out whats wrong
Have a 1996 sohc neon. when backing up it hesitates bad and backfires, and then when i put it in drive it hesitates backfires runs up to 2nd gear shift hesitates back fires runs up to third gear and does the same. if i give it more than 1/4 throttle it backfires badly before it'll shift it was throwing the egr code when i did the key dance so we replaced that, also replaced all the spark plugs with champion plugs, also checked ignition coil connections and they all look really good now it still hesitates and backfires and its not throwing any codes but i think my my cel light may be burnt. can anybody help us out with this problem
to me, it sounds like it could be a couple things, anyone else feel free to correct me, i'm mostly just throwin out ideas
possibly throttle position sensor, makin it run rich or lean enough to fire (probably not), timing belt jumped a tooth or more (somewhat possible/likely), or something with the transmission since it's doing it while shifting
secondly, are you sure it's backfiring, and not some other sound and/or feeling that's similar to a backfire? that could help narrow it down as well
does it only do it while cold, all the time, etc.? the more information you can provide, the better
ANY other little things that have happened in the recent past (ongoing or fixed) could also contribute to it

backfire is an explosion of fuelbefore it enters the combustion camber, meaning fire would be coming out of you induction system.
afterfire is and explosion of unburn fuel in you exhaust system, i think this is what you mean. a car will afterfire because the air fuel ratio isnt correct (rich) or a exhaust leak. i would be leaning to the side of air temp sensor, since this controls most of the mixture

it is backfiring but it sounds like its backfiring in the manifold, it does it all the time, when i start my car it revs extremly high. b4 my cel light went out i was throwing the tps code but didnt think this to be prob. i bought this car from a tow yard/mechanic shop a lil over a year ago. how can i check to see if the timing slipped
how can i check to see if the timing slipped
how would i check the air temp sensor?
try getting a maintenance manual this will help alot
i know i was coding tps but ive been told this most likely is not the prob. i appriciate all the help but if you could be a bit more specific regarding
remove the timing belt cover, place #1 at TDC. ensure the cam is in the correct position.
im not sure where the timing belt cover is and not sure what is # 1 and what is the TDC?

i dont know of any other way to check the timing other than just redoing it.
this link gives a genral info on the process

basicly #1 cylinder should be at top dead and the cam gear is lined up with its mark.
if you really want to troubleshoot this you should seriuosly consider getting a maintenance manual
FYI the comp will give you a CEL if the timing if off
high idlewould indicate a vacuum leak could lean your mixture too causing backfire

i dont know if these codes were stored previously cauase i just now learned how to resest computer, and when i reset it to check the egr code my light never came back on think i burnt the bulb reflowing solder need to check that these were the codes stored #12 ( i know thats not an issue) #24 tps #32 egr (which i just replaced) #42 #54 & # 55 (end of codes)
