Default Advice Please, Cause of my neon burning oil..

Hello Everyone,

Well i recently bout this car (1996 dodge neon 2.0 SOHC, Auto) it has about 100,000 miles and runs great, it seems to burn a some oil every few weeks. I add about half a quart.

I did a tune up today, and when pulling the plugs I noticed that spark plug 1 had a lot of oil on it.

Now from my research this is either the spark plug tube seals or valve cover gasket.

The car doesnt blow blue or anything or have any visible leaks underneath, I am thinking the Valve cover gasket is the culprit of my car burning Oil?

Any advice, I am gonna replace the gasket/tubes tommorow regardless.

well, when you buy the valve cover gasket, it normally comes with new spark plug tube seals. so just replace both. and its only like $30 from autozone.

When you take off the valve cover, on the inside of the valve cover where the spark plugs go through, you would see the spark plug tube seal, just take them off and put the new ones in. its pretty easy.

I am going to do both, I dont need advice on how to replace them ( i know how to do both).

I actually wanted opinions (past exp) on whether or not this could be the cause of my oil consumption?

I guess ill find out and see regardless.

Thanks

I don't know about ya'll, but my seals were a pain in the butt to remove! Is there an easy way to do it? I ended up using a screwdriver to pry them out, I didn't notice any damage from the screwdriver, and then beat the hell out of em with a rubber mallet to get the darn things to go in.

If it is leaking that much it could be, but it wouldnt be burning it. Was the oil in the spark plug tube or on the tip of the plug?

ive owned 3 neons. 96, 2000, 05 all of them burned oil at a rate of about 3/4 quarts per 4-6k miles depending on how hard i drove. i owned the 2000 since new and the 05 since 16k miles, so what im saying is that its not like these motors were junk when i got em.

The oil was in the spark plug tube.

UPDATE:

Did the valve cover and spark plug tube seals today, pretty easy took me about 45 minutes.

Those spark plug tube seals were tight, I used a pair of pliers to grab the inside of the rubber and held the valve cover down with one hand and just pried them out.

I started up and have driven it and there is no oil in plug 1 anymore, lets see if this solves my oil burning issue as well.

Thanks!
