Worked on it today and finally identified the problem. It was not the cable as I thought. It was a gumbed up return spring in the shifter tube. It wouldn't let the release button on the shifter reset, which wouldn't allow it to push down some kind of plastic release lever, which in turn pulled the cable that released the key. Man............all that and a fix with a squirt of carb cleaner and lube. At least it didn't cost me any money, only aggrivation.
