Default My NEON is possessed! Flashing lights, dies

Ok, I'm confused. I've searched all day and cannot find any relevant info re: this. My daughter has a 1999 Neon Sport with 78K miles. Today at college it died as she came to a stop sign and wouldn't restart. (ok, not the battery, getting spark and fuel, it restarts fine, later) My first thought was Crank Pos. Sensor. She was able to get it back to the house. I checked the error codes: result: 55 -> nothing. I started it 5+ times in a row, no problems, no hesitation, no roughness. BUT heres the KICKER Every time I start it, the lights flash for up to a minute. The dash lights, dome light, exterior parking lights flash just like hazard lights, but the hazard "turn signal" indicators on the dash do not light up!?. To the best of my knowledge there is NO ALARm nor has there ever been one on this car. I checked fuses (just for fun). I tried pressing the brake, turning on the headlights and the emergency flashers. No change. It eventually stops, unless I turn the car off and start it again. Very annoying and wondering if it has ANYTHING to do with the fact that the car won't start regularly (my daugther just told me the "flashing" lights have been going for a few months. Any clues? I don't like her being stranded, esp. at night. Thanks to all who read this and throw a clue my way! PS I have cleaned the battery and checked relays under the hood. This car also does NOT have keyless entry, but has power locks.

Sounds like she's got a short somewhere.

I'd have the electrical system looked at. This is all just speculation but its a place to start.

By the way, welcome to DF.

Does sound like a short or bad ground leading to the a control module. Will probably need to have professional help.

I have a 98 neon sport and the sports come with a factory alarm system. If you don't use the automatic doorlocks or if you disconnect the battery the car won't start and the hazards will flash unless it is deactivated by the door lock on the key chain. So I'm guessing if your daughters car died for some strange reason then the alarm system could be activated.

Yep sounds like a bad ground somewhere. Check all the ground connections especially where they connect to the frame and body, not just the battery.

Also if you have trailer lights hooked up some where check the wiring to that. You may have pulled a Uhaul trailer so I thoght I would mention that.

Deja Vu!

About 4 months ago I had the same problem. My 2001 Neon would start 20% of the time though. the rest of the time it would do nothing but make a ticking sound like a bomb, or the lights would flash. To make a long story short. My mechanic told me that I had to replace the multi-switch that controls the turn signals, head lights, hazards, and wipers. It's located in the steering column. For the 2001 it ran about $125 for the part but it did the trick.
I know the year of the cars are different , but it may give you something to look at.

Hope this helps

Laters.

I gota issue and was wondering if anyone had any insight! My dodge neon 2001 is doing something weird. The entire dash of lights flashes on like a christmas tree for a second while I am driving and then it stops (happened 4 times today). The car hasn't had anything wrong with it since last year when I had the wiring harness replaced and signal light/windshield wiper switch replaced. Any ideas?? Is this thing going to just stop working?? [&:]

Unhappy 99 stratus - - flashers & ext lights flashing after jump starting!!

Help!!! I haven't seen anything exactly like what happened here....have a 1999 stratus....battery went dead, jump started.....now the exterior lights (flashers, etc) flash for about a minute everytime the car is started.....Bought the car used a couple years ago so contacted the dealer and they said it doesn't "appear" as though the vehicle was equipped with a factory alarm.....so, any ideas? Or, just in case the dealer is wrong, anyone know how to "deactivate" an alarm without a key fob???

Thanks for any help/suggestions! Truly appreciate it!
