so can someone brake it down machanicly speaking... using mecanical terms... what exactly will the higher gear ratio cause the car to do... Transmission gearing is one of the things I really dont understand...

The way I understand it that taller gears allow you to stay in gear longer right???
so the way i see it the 3.55 gets threw the gears really quick so it can get you in a higher gear and able to save some gas...
so in theroy the 3.94 will allow you to stay in gear longer wasting more gas but gives you better acceleration...

is my thinking right...
Nope, The 3.94's will allow you to go through the gears quicker, the 3.55's are for better gas mileage and it takes longer to go through the gears. To prove this a ATX has a 2.83 gear ratio and we all know how slow those are. Example the ATX first gear goes up to about 55-60 mph at 6,000 rpm, the mtx first gear is about 40-45mph at 6,000 Rpm.

The lower the number in the gear ratio the long you'll stay in gear and the more you stress your motor. the higher the number the faster the acceleration. Pretty much you have a 5 speed and unless you are going for max speed and have a hell of a motor or need gas mileage. In theory if you had enough power to max out both the 3.55 trans and the 3.94 trans the 3.55 trans would top out at 155mph and the 3.94 at 140mph so really unless you really need gas mileage or want to go 155mph then stay 3.55.

If you want useable power and better off the line power and better power band all together go 3.94. the shorter gear ratios of the mtx transmissions are the biggest reason why they are faster than a atx beside not losing as much power through them due to less drag.

Also think of it this way if you have ever ridden a moutain bike, first gear you are pedaling veryfast but not moving fastbut you got to your top speed for that gear quickerand you have extreme power and quick acceleration but you have 18 speeds to make up for the short gears because we're humans and can't do very high rpm's, nowput that moutain bike in second gear and try to go up a hill or take off fastyou notice its much harder think of the 3.55 gears as being in second gear compared to being in first gear with the 3.94's (probably not that big of a difference but u get the analogy )the same applys to cars the lower gears you are in the faster u top out and shorter your in gear. The numerically lower numbers u are in gear longer its oppisite from what you'd think.

So in short second gear in a mtx is first gear in a atx and if you have ever tried to start out in second gear you know its not as powerful as first and thats because first gear has a numerically higher number.

Thats why Chevy cars are so quick off the start becausethey have really low gearing.

3:55 tranny.....better for turbo since you can stay in the gears longer
3:94 tranny.....better for N/A since you dont need to stay in the gears as long...

in 5th gear doing about 60mph, the 3:55 tranny revs almost 1,000 rpms lower then the 3:94 tranny....therefor, better gas milage...

doing 60mph in 5th gear with a 3:94 tranny has about the same acceleration as 4th gear in a 3:55 tranny

all depends what your going to use the car for, for drag racing, if your going na, the 3.94 works best
if your going to turbo, or have a lot of torque, the 3.55 will be easier to control wheelspin with and keep you in gear longer

autocross, if you have a higher rev limiter using an upgraded pcm, stick with the 3.55, it will allow you to stay in 2nd on the entire course, no matter how open it is

any gearing questions are my specialty, ive racing motocross for 8 years and we change gearing at each track to best suit the conditions (ie. rain, hills, corners, fast straights, deep loam etc.)

then your looking at the 3.94's hands down then. No questions asked its the fastest stock Neon manual transmission with the best gearing for NA and mild turbo set ups.
