could the sohc trans be making my 2.4 slow
ok well everyone says the dohc tops speed is 130.. well today i did top speed and i only got to 108... so could my 3:55 be making my car lack in top speed.. im really thinking of getting the 3.94
Cams and head work will bring more top and than a trans swap. In reality, the 3.55 will have more of a top end than either 3.94 mtx's can hop to produce. Boost is also another avenue to consider. What cams are you using now?
*EDIT* I see you have the 2.0 cams. As you are aware the 2.0L does rev higher, but the 2.4L has more torque down low. You'll have to spend some money now to get the sick effect of a 2.4L with top end.

At 6500 Rpm in 5th gear the 3.55 Gears are doing 177mph. Your gonna need at least 300hp to get to 140mph with these gears. These are the gas mileage gears made to make the engine run lower rpm's than the performance trans for better gas milage thats the only bennifit you'll see unless you have a $8,000 motor that can churn up to 170+mph.
At 6500 Rpm in 5th Gear the 3.94 Gears are doing 142mph. This is a more realistic gear ratio for a near stock 2.4 or 2.0. These gears will spool up to their top speed with authority.
The truth is you may never hit 140mph+ no matter how built your engine is due to many reasons lack of a place to do itand not enough sack to do it for yourself or your motor is not up to the task for doing it,so in the mean time if you want to get to 130mph quicker use the dohc gears or rather 3.94 transmission.
My wifes sohc atx will do 115mph with whatever the smoking problem is that it has if that makes u feel any better
its running with a 20% loss of power too but on the flip side it takes a good 4 miles to safely get up to 115mph. In the old days with the motor healthy it would do 115mph in short order within a half mile.
yeah see i just dont see what my problem is i get up to 108 in 4th gear and i shift into 5th and i stay steady at 108....
and i would think with my mods i should atleast be at 115 or even 118 the sohc limiter.. but i dont have a speed sensor so im pretty sure i dont have a limiter... i dont know i just wanted to have a good top speed i know in 1/4 top speed really doesnt matter at all.. but it would just be cool

First off a 2.4L (without some cams) does not have the top end the DOHC 2.0 does. Period. Now with the larger cams (#22 and up) your neon will have a sick amount of power. This is where being cheap has to take a back seat, and well worth it. You could go turbo for what you will spend in cams, or at least I could/will. Bear in mind a turbo 2.4 hits 12's in a 1G. Fast than the C5 and good enough to **** off a C6 for not leaving you in the dust.

i think im gonna go turbo... i wanted to stay NA, but with the turbo i will see results fast... and if i uprage the internals it should allow me to run more boost..
