Default Shotgun Sold! Time to get some parts!

Im going to have $800 to blow on the Neon. Other than the Kirk racing header and MSD coil, better plug wires, and plugs, what the hell else should l get? I would like a better intake manifold and a larger diameter throttle body also. Maybe the throttle body, header, MSD, plugs/wires, and a MP computer would be the ticket.

buy expensive things while you have the money. its easier to save 250 for a mopar pcm than 350-500 for an intake manifold.

Good advice. The plugs/wires and smaller stuff shouldnt need to come out of the extra money.

Do you have a SOHC or DOHC? If you have a SOHC, dont bother with an intake manifold, and if you have a DOHC that I wouldnt make that a priority. I would start out with a 3.0 CAI, ATX TB (if you have a 5spd, and you havnt done that already.), a MP pcm, prothane engine mounts, some plugs, wires, header, UD pulley, muffler (if you have a SOHC), and a cam if you have enough money. Dont bother with the MSD coil, it puts out the same amount of spark as the stock coil pack. The only aftermarket coil pack for the neons that actually produces any more spark would be the screamin demon coil pack, but remember, hot spark isnt always good unless you have the supporting mods to back it up. Dont go too big on the TB, the ATX 52mm TB is plenty for the mods you are thinking of doing.

Ive got a SOHC 5 speed. What does 3.0 CAI, ATX TB mean? I dont get the abbreviations. Underdrive pully and cam are good choices, though.

The 3.0 is acold air intake setup useing the intake tube off a 3 liter Dodge van.

The atx tb is the throttle body off a auto trans car vs a mtx (manual), the atx tb has a larger bore.

Thanks for the translation. Those are cool "inexpensive" upgrades. Ive got an AEM intake but its not really cold air, but the throttle body upgrade is good to know. How much larger is the ATX than the MTX tb?

dont believe the hype that you can go too big with the throttle body, the current biggest off the shelf throttle body is 60mm

i went from my manual tranny 49mm throttle body, to an automatic tranny throttle body, and got a decent gain throughout the whole powerband, and then went to a 60mm throttle body and got another more significant gain throughout the whole powerband

it has to do with velocity, with the air going through the smaller throttle body, it has to go faster cause theres not as much space for it to get enough through, when it does this, the air shoots around the 90 degree angle at the bottom of the intake manifold and most of it goes to the runners for cylinders 1 and 2, leaving 3 and 4 to make do with whats left

with the bigger throttle body the air can move through more leisurely and therefore isnt immediately shot to the far side of the intake manifold, leaving cylinders 3 and 4 more air to choose from

if you want proof, monday i can hook up my 52mm throttle body and do a compression check on all 4 cylinders at full throttle, then hook up my 60mm and do the same and check again

my current set up is

pacesetter header (only one legal in cali) 150 non ceramic coated, 230 ceramic coated
glasspack muffler 50
3.0 cai70
unorthodox racing underdrive pulley 200
60mm modern performance (MPx) throttle body 230

comes out to 780 for a decent street car, of course later good upgrades would be the mopar computer (although needs 92 octane), and a cam off of a 95 neon.

my car with above mods (not counting the cam and computer and on 3 year old bald crap tires it came with) does a mid to high 14 in the quarter, although my car weighs 2000 pounds with a quarter tank of gas. Your car probably weighs in the 2500 to 2600 pounds range, but those mods would still give you a strong engine
