Default Question about crankshaft sensors.

My dohc neon died on the highway the other day. I found that the crankshaft sensor was bad as it had a groove worn in it. I dumped the oil but didn't find any metal shavings or flakes. Is this something that happens over time or should I drop the oil pan and have a better look? I picked up a new sensor and it did start again but I didn't let it run for any length of time. Thanks

You can drop the pan if you'd like. I don't see a need to though.
