Default Stalling 99

I bought this newish 99 Neon for my son to drive a few months ago. It only has 71K on it so I'm surprised I'm having issues already. In any case, the car has developed a stalling problem at low RPM's. I changed the plugs and air filter today and found out from the guy at NAPA that the fuel filter is a part of the fuel pump and is not meant to be changed . I read the thread about the crank sensor but the symptoms don't seem to be the same. I won't see the car again for a day so I won't have an opportunity to test drive it.

I'm trying to formulate a plan just in case my tune up didn't do the trick. I'll run some injector cleaner through it even though I doubt that will do the trick. I'll take it to Auto Zone and see if it's kicking out any codes for me to deal with. I don't know exactly what to try next. The O2 sensor maybe?

Suggestions are helpful.

Weird. I have a filter on the pump canister, the pump itself, and one right outside the the tank next to the fuel pump. The oens in the tank are more of a strainer then a filter. The actual filter is on the outside. Is it a atx or mtx? sohc or dohc? any cels?

It's a ATX DOHC. We're not getting any CEL's so the whole thing about checking codes is probably pointless. I'm happy to find out about the filters though. I may just have to plop down the $20 for the Haynes manual.

I also have a 91 Mazda Protege that I did an engine swap on and I had to change the fuel pump in that. The filter inside the tanks was like you describe, porous cloth or screen more than a filter.

Thanks, that helps. The guy at the parts house didn't know what he was talking about.

Oh yea. A common problem with idling is the tb sensors. The tbs and the other one. I cant think of it right now.

plastic tank i assume, I was told the same thing about the fuel pump and filter all being one unit. Other than that little fabric bag that was on the pickup line i dont knowwhat else there is for the fuel filter. it may be unrelated but have you checked the fuel pressure?

Metal tank is the same. The difference is the plastic tank has the regulator on the canister and the metal tank has the return line setup back out of the filter. So it has 3 hoses instead of the 2. Works a little different. The metal tank fuel pump is easy for turbo setup :-) it has all the fitting already on it. Just need to drill one hole and thats it.

I talked with my son yesterday and he said that the stalling problem has gone away now. I think he's changed his driving habits a bit so as not to make the car stall so much but for him to say it's not stalling at all makes me think I got the problem with the little tune up. (spark plugs and air filter)

Thanks for all the response to my questions. It helped

My son is at college so I'm going to pick this project up again. I haven't really had a chance to work on it yet but will begin the process of trying to fix it.
