Ok, thanks in advance.... I have a 99 neon manual shifter. I have read the earlier posts and have a quick question. It grinds in second gear either up or down shifting. I have heard syncronizers, or forks could be the problem. Either way, I don't work on transmissions. I hear a used transmission is cheaper than a fix. True? The only work I know that was done prior to me getting the car was that it did have a clutch cable replaced at one time. Could this be part of the problem?

Also, how do I know if I have a conventional or modular clutch?

 

You have a 99 so if your vin starts with a 1, then you have a modular clutch.

You can find a used tranny from about $75-$200. So many times it is quicker and easier to replace the tranny.
