crank pulley bolt broke
so i was tightening on my crank pulley after replacing timing belt and water pump and the bolt broke right off i dont know what i did wrong because the pulley wasn't all the way back yet. i tore up the pulley takin it off so i just used the pulley off the sohc for my dohc and went on but wouldnt tighten all the way down are both pulleys the same? also if i use a puller and get the pulley off will i be able to extract the bolt right out? the bolt snapped about halfway down so do u think there will be some of the bolt sticking out if i take the pulley out? i was just thinking about leaving it because all im running is the alternator no ps or ac. but what should i do?

I have never broke a bolt before, and I always use the bolt to pull the pulley into the crank. You need to remove the pulley and try to back the old bolt out with a vise grips or an easy out. The pulleys are the same between motors. You NEED to pulley secure before you even think about driving the vehicle. Usually the head of the bolt is what keeps the bolt tight. SO it shouldnt be that hard to get out if the head is broke off. Unless you messed up the threads also.

well the bolt broke about half way down so i dont know if i can get to the rest of the bolt if i take the pulley off again. and when i went to put it back on i just pushed the pulley up to the crank and slid the bolt in and started tightening until it broke then ive been drivin it how it is with no bolt. all its running is the alternator

I would not run the motor without the pulley being secure. Next time use a blog of wood and hammer and get it on as far as you can. I have messed up threads using the bolt to pull the pulley on, a few times. Like I said. THe threads dont lock the bolt in, the head does. I am sure it broke at the crank or further out. WHat I would do: Pull it back off, try to use the old bolt to turn out the other end of the threads. If that fails I would use a chisel and hammer it in to make it like a standard screw hole, and use a screw driver to try and back it out. After that try and easy out. It should come out. Just dont mess up the threads on the cranks.
