Default starter wont turn off

i replaced my starter (and my negative battery cable cause it looked like crap) and when i went to start the car, it turned over, started for a few seconds, and died but the starter kept humming/buzzing. i had to disconnect the battery. it got dark so i will try again tomorrow but does anyone know what my problem could be? do i have a short or something? do i have my wiring messed up? one wire can only go in one place and one way but there are two wires( one ground and one that goes to the battery) that connect to a bolt on the starter. would it matter if i put them on in the wrong order? i may have done that. i cant remember how they were. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks!

I've heard of solenoids sticking, was this starter brand new, reman, or j-yard? Either way, you'd want to check the wiring in the day, next time it happens try tapping the solenoid or starter with a hammer to try to free it up if it was stuck.
