Default brake upgrades?

anyone know of caliper and/or master cylinder upgrades that could be done on a 1gen? i have real nice brakes on my neon (baer slotted/cross drilled front, hawk or ebc pads also up front, and back is just stock replacement PBR drum rotors with oem shoes. my brake now feels a bit mushy or soft, i still have good braking power, but the pedal just isn't as firm as i'd like. i also painted my drum rotors on the back, and the calipers on the front. the paint on my calipers is flaking off near the corners, where it switches from by the pads to going across the rotors. this leads me to believe my calipers are flexing.

so, any upgrades without changing out my rotors? maybe my drum shoes are too far away so it takes more pedal to make them contact?
