I just had to change my spark plugs, completely fouled out but did NOT see any oil in them. so can finding oil in your plugs diffrenciate between a valve seal problem and a head gasket problem???

As far as COOLANT, my problem has been going on for like im gonna say over a month and has used a lil coolant. the coolant is not muddy looking. its blue.

valve stem seals? head gasket? any leads to which one?

I would point more to valve stem seals then, if your coolant still looks good. That would be an indication of a healthy headgasket. You could also have blow-by from piston rings. Have you done a compression check?

thankz for the feed back man,

I have had 3 people look at my car,(trying to get a more of an idea before i let some mechanic take advantage of me) 1 said valve seals , 1 says head gasket, 1 says it could be either one.

I am getting a compression check sunday 10/25 which is the soonest i am not at work and my friend can get the machine to his house. so from there if it doesnt read right i guess its a head gasket prob? but if not valve seals seem likely.

ugh, head gasket prob seems so expensive.

what should a proper compression test read on my 96 avenger 4cylinder 2.0 dohc?
i'm sure my friends know but i was just wondering myself before i go over there.

If you were having headgasket issues, you would have milky oil or muddy coolant. You would also be experiencing temperature/overheating issues.

Your compression numbers should be relatively close together, ie:175-165-160-175 or 195-190-185-180. What you do not want to see is 165-125-115-180.

Well, not once has my temp overheated, it stays right there in the middle always, tho everything seems so freaking hot under my hood. but i dont know if thats normal, i mean i know everything gets hot.

only used a lil coolant in over a month, not very much,

i did see yesterday when i had to feed my car oil, a lil milky substance on the bottom of the oil cap. I either have just noticed it or it just started happening, and I have had a few ppl like i said check over my oil and talk about head gasket probs so i would think one of us would have noticed it before just now.

thankz for the numbers so I can get a good idea what to look out for.
