You picked a good car to start out with. Easy to work on, very simple setup.
(1) start with Cold air intake...You can make one yourself or buy one.
(2) Buy you a good set of headders...preferably long tube, unless you need emissions.
(3) Good high flow catalytic converter and cat-back exhaust system. (nothing looks worse than a pieced together exhaust falling off the back of the car.)

That's the basics...or just save up and go turbo.

ATX TB. and the highflow cat isn't necessary. the stock cat already flows pretty darn good.

Here's how I started...
www.modernperformance.com is your friend...

Full tune up. Plugs, wires, fluids... Drop in some M1 synthetic... Check when the t-belt was replaced...Yeah...

I got the street inserts to kill wheel hop (nothing breaks crap faster then that)
Basic bolt ons. $30 ATX TB (usually for sale on the forum), $50 3.0 CAI (search for how to make that), $100 Underdrive Pulley (ebay's cheaper)

If your autmoatic, swapping to an MTX will boost your power alot.
If you're SOHC, I'm sorry.
