Default What/How to clean my pistons

I just broke my engine down to rebuild it - I am trying to re-use 3 of the 4 pistons from my old block - the 1st piston went thru the block!

In the 1st pic - on the left is one of my original piston - the one on the right is a brand new piston - what can I use to clean up the old piston

Should I be concern about the build up on the old piston - all 3 of my pistons are gooked up with some sort of burnt on crap!

The 2nd pic has the Old piston on top and the new one on bottom.

Any input would be greatly appreciated

Greg

Its just carbon. A wire brush will take it off.

they sell part cleaner at the store that takes off carbon build up.. just make sure it is ok to use on pistons..... that will make it easier with the wire brush

It should come off easy with a wire brush. The cleaner will help though. It won't damage the pistons they are metal.

When you say parts cleaner - are you refering to stuff like Brake Parts Cleaner or Mineral Spirits?? Or do you recommend something else?

Thanks for the feedback Casper and RayDog26!

I have to agree RayDog26 - that piston is f**cked up! I can't complian - I had over 18 races on that engine and I was running down the 1st place car - I pulled up right behind them coming out of Turn 3 at AMS - just as I stared to pull along side - the Rod went right thru my block!

some thing like that would work but you can prolly get a smaller can since your only doing pistons unless u wanna do all the other parts.

That will work, they have smaller spray cans too though.

I found that carb cleaner (not the spray can either) works excellent for motor parts, as long as there is no plastic or really soft thin metal. The stuff eats anything. Juts give it a couple hour soak, and most parts come out perfectly clean.
