Default Need to locate

Hi I need to locate the Mass Air Flow sensor (if any) for a SOHC 1997 plymouth neon just over 93,000 miles. I seen the sticky on top of this thread about the MAP/IAT Sensor SOHC. Dont know if they are the same.

Im still having these syptoms after replacing the PCV Valve, Cam, Crank and Throttle position sensors :

1. A gas smell even after warm-up and/or pinging at random times or all the time or whenever.
2. Excessive fuel consumption (rich)
3. Rough idle
4. Hesitation
5. Car becomes "stiff" whilst accelerating then finally dies. I have to drive short distances to local grocery stores to run my errands 20 min trips and on the way back home the car begin to stiff and lose acceleration power.

I'm running out of options as to what this could be (a good thing). Fewer possibilities usually means getting close to the problem I guess (hopfully).

That leaves the Cat converter and Up/Down stream sensors. But I would like to try the following before dumping any more money into something that isnt needed.

I read about that you can take out the Mass Air Flow sensor and clean it with some CRC electronics cleaner because it becomes contaminated dirty oil and dirt and many says positive results after this and their symptoms went away. Any advice on this matter will be very appretiated.

Thanks in advance.

That should help...

Thats off a 95 so it has two sensors (one is the MAP and the other is the IAT) which on the 96+ models its all one sensor.

the MAP sensor is kind of like a MAS which is what I figured he was talking about.

Key dance... No. The engine light is not kicking in even if the car shuts off. No Error codes whatsoever.

Well I did pull out the MAP sensor the picture pointed me to, and that thing was filthy. I cleaned it with CRC MAF cleaner. If it was a MAF or not I cleaned it anyhow drove it for a while and everything seems to be good so far. Except the gassy odor that lingered around the car. What could it be?

Im now concearned about my cat converter as it have a rattle to it. Can those sometimes cause the symtoms I descrbed above? I remember back in december I ran over a frozen snow chunk and it broke the pipe right where the end of the cat is. I had to drive the rest of the day that way cause the local muffler shop was closed on sunday and I was quite a ways from home. VERY loud and the inside of car was i vibrating machine. When I finally got it welded back together and started research I came to realize that because of this maybe this is part of the reason I ran into these problems that wont go away.

Damaged cat and o2 sensors? Cracked exaust manifold?

Exaust manifold holds upstream and just below the cat holds the downstream? Something under there probrably got damaged what do you guys think? I'm at the point of giving up.

First I would like to say thanks for all who take the time out of their day to type the words that would hopefully give me help for my Neon troubles Im having this summer. I really appreciate it deeply.

After cleaning that MAP sensor yesterday, I drove the Neon for over an hour non-stop for a good 8 miles today. Beforehand I could barely get two! Woo-Hoo!But... My speedometer start jumping around and sometimes non responsive. I would hit a bump and it would return to normal. Then jump around again. Then I discovered my cooling fans arent responsive.

For those of you that remember the history of my problems do you think that I may have an electrical problem thats causing all these mis-diagnosis's? A problem that the electrical currents that suppose to run through the car are not getting to the parts like clockwork? How do I go about a possible electrical problem? Where do I start? My God. One thing on top of another. This isnt my year.

Hey tripleduo,

Did you ever figure out a solution to the speedometer jumping issue? I'm having the same problem.

Thanks,
Pepov
