Today the battery light in my 1998 neon came on and I'm not sure whats wrong. As I was driving the car home the needles all dropped down then came back up to where they were before; this happened several times in a row. The performance didn't change though, ie the engine didn't die down or lose any power. I think it might be the alternator but I'm not sure, can anyone help me with this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

 

This sounds like either a bad battery or alternator my 95 gauges did this when the battery went bad. The first thing would be to check and clean all the battery connections as required and make sure the alternator belt is in good condition. Then if you have a volt meter, measure the battery voltage when off and again when running. A fully charged battery should read around 13.2v and around 14.5v while charging. If this doesn’t give you an indication of what the problem is then have the alternator checked and the battery load tested.
