Default changing out heads

i am wanting to change the head off my 95 neon and put it on my 98 they are both dohc motors and i read on here i will gaain about 6 hp and i think my motor has a vavle problem there is black sute in my intake manifold i the the intake vavle is bent a lil from when my water pump broke and my timing belt did when it did but my question is do i have to send the head to a machine shop i was told it had to be when u changed out heads is that ture or can i change it out myself

any one have any info on this cause i am wanting to do it wenesday when i get paid if i dont have to send it off

you can change it your self as long as the head is still good jus torque the head studs down to spec change water pump timing belt and check your idler puley make sure there is no play

i just put new timing belt and water pump on itabout 3000 miles ago do i still need to change them

no uless you see need to but make sure you check the idler pulley if it goes so does your timing belt and say bye bye to that head but if you jus pt em on it 3k ago leave em you cn reuse em

You will not gain any HP going from DOHC head to DOHC. The 95 SOHC camshaft is the one that offers 4-6 HP gain, not the DOHC cams.
