I have a 97 sohc automatic 4dr neon. My trans cable broke at the transmission. The off-white plastic piece snapped at the very end connecting the cable to the trans.

Can I fix this, at that piece, or do I need a new cable?

If so where can I find these pieces or cable?

You will need a new cable. You can try RockAuto.com, they could have it. You can also try the dealership, but you better hope it is not a discontinued part as a lot of older parts for Dodge cars are becoming. Even if it is NOT discontinued, if they have to order it, you may not get it for awhile due to Dodge not paying the parts suppliers for past orders, so some suppliers are not providing Dodge with parts unless COD or prepaid.

Your best best is a junkyard.

One further thing. Did you find the end that popped off? If not, it may be inside the bellhousing and if so, it will bang around inside and could cause damage. I would suggest that if this is the case, you may want to separate the two just enough to check. PITA I know, but safer.

 

Dealer had to find it. $69 dealer list cost.

It is not difficult to replace one, but it is a PITA as you have to take out the battery and box to gain access to the trans end of the cable - you have probably done that already to diagnose the problem.

You also have to undo the interior end of the cable from the linkage and to do that, you have to take apart the center console to get to it.

Also, the cable itself passes through a holder (over the catalytic converter by the firewall and runs parallel to the exhaust pipe into the engine compartment) that you will need to undo, so do this when it is cold or you will get oh so burned! And the holder on the tranny itself.

Should take you about 2-3 hours depending on your skill level.

I do but I have helped replace one in a buddies car. Really, the biggest PITA was the center console.
