Default 96 neon transmission problem

my tranny is leaking, pep boys says its from the front/pump area. but they cant fix it and recommend going somewhere else. problem is i need it fixed quickly. if this is something i can fix i will, i have done a bunch of repairs on it before but i am by no means a mechanic. what do you guys think? wait for someone else or do it myself? i have no idea what to do and it is not in the haynes or the chilton manuals. how much should it be if i have someone else do it (everyone i called is closed or i'd ask them.) thanks! -mitchell

ok, transmission repair place wants 1400, too much. found one in a junk yard for 200, but people want4-600 to install it. how hard is it to remove and install a transmission (automatic) and are any special tools required? this may be the end of my neon...

No way should you pay that much. I think I have a PDF from the FSM if you would like me to email it to you.

I personally would verify that's indeed were it is leaking. soooooo many times I come across shops telling customers that there trans is shot and thats why it's leaking. so I end up buying these projects, I love building transmissions.. Well a couple vehicles were leaking from the trans cooler hose. replaced the hose and quickly sold the vehicle for big profit. And just how bad is it leaking... like are you loosing gallons a minute or are you just getting say a 2" dia puddle?

You should find where the leak is coming from, before replacing the unit. Could be a dented drip pan, or faulty drip pan gasket. Juding by the amount of fluid, it probably settles most when parked. Also check your transmission cooler lines. They run through the radiator.
